Rodrigo Cuevas

Born in Oviedo in 1985 and long established in the rural Asturias, Rodrigo Cuevas has, since the early 2010s, developed work situated between Iberian folklore, folk song, cabaret and electronic pop. Trained at the conservatoire, after stints in Barcelona and then Galicia, where he drew on traditional music and dance, Rodrigo Cuevas first joined the duo La Dolorosa Compañía before building a solo project where Asturian and Galician repertoires, copla, stage humor and performance intersect. His first disc formats, Yo soy la Maga (2012), Prince of Verdiciu (2016) and the EP Embrujada / Pánico en el Edén (2017), lay the foundations of a writing that blends traditional materials with contemporary treatments. With Manual de Cortejo, published in 2019 in collaboration with Raül Refree, Rodrigo Cuevas further broadens this approach by giving central space to popular narratives and marginal figures, and then continues this work with Manual de Romería in 2023, produced by Eduardo Cabra. On stage, his shows Electrocuplé, El mundo por montera, Trópico de Covadonga and La Romería extend this hybrid aesthetics, between singing, storytelling, theatricality and dancing pulsation, in contexts ranging from venues to festivals. In 2023, Rodrigo Cuevas received the National Award for Contemporary Music in Spain.
