Duke Garwood
London guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Duke Garwood has developed since the mid-2000s a stripped-down approach to blues and folk on the margins of psychedelic rock. Initially active as a sideman, he began his solo discography with Holy Week (2005), Emerald Palace (2007) and The Sand That Falls (2009), which establish repetitive guitar motifs, a very spare playing style and a deep, almost whispered vocal delivery. With Dreamboatsafari (2011) he shifted his writing toward more atmospheric, slower moods, while Heavy Love (2015) and Garden of Ashes (2017), released on Heavenly Recordings, refine a blend of minimal blues, haunted folk and desert-tinged rock. At the same time Garwood forged a notable collaboration with Mark Lanegan that resulted in Black Pudding (2013) and With Animals (2018), centered on simple structures, gritty guitar textures and restrained tension. He has also appeared with formations like Archie Bronson Outfit and in the orbit of electronic and downtempo projects such as The Orb and UNKLE, where his sense for dark atmospheres and spare arrangements feeds more collective contexts, both on record and on stage across the UK and Europe.
