Anton Newcombe

Born in Newport Beach, California, Anton Newcombe has, since the late 1980s, built a career as a musician, songwriter and producer centered on a fluid form of psychedelic rock infused with folk, shoegaze and more experimental approaches. Settled at the heart of San Francisco’s independent scene in the early 1990s, he founded The Brian Jonestown Massacre in 1990, a band with a rotating lineup in which he quickly became the principal writing and production force. His approach blends distorted and acoustic guitars, melodies indebted to the 1960s, repetitive textures and a taste for hazy atmospheres. His trajectory is also documented in Dig! (2004), which focuses on the relationship between The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. Alongside the band, Newcombe has pursued numerous projects and collaborations, notably with Tess Parks on I Declare Nothing (2015) and Tess Parks & Anton Newcombe (2018), and as part of L’Épée from 2019 with Emmanuelle Seigner and The Limiñanas. He also composed the score for the film Moon Dogs (2016) and has expanded his production work through his label, A Recordings.
