Extreme

Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in the mid-1980s, Extreme coalesced around singer Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, with a rhythm section anchored by Pat Badger on bass and, on drums, initially Paul Geary, later succeeded by Mike Mangini and then Kevin Figueiredo. Rooted in hard rock and glam metal while incorporating pronounced elements of funk rock and acoustic balladry, the band emerged from the New England club circuit before issuing its self-titled debut in 1989. Extreme II: Pornograffitti, released in 1990, sharpened the contrasts between funk riffs, melodic hooks, and acoustic numbers, while 1992’s III Sides to Every Story adopted a more conceptual framework. Waiting for the Punchline (1995) moved toward a rawer, alternative-leaning sound, preceding an extended hiatus. Reappearing in the mid-2000s, Extreme resumed regular live activity and released Saudades de Rock in 2008 and Six in 2023, extending an aesthetic built on Bettencourt’s intricate guitar work, Cherone’s vocal harmonies, and songwriting that straddles funk metal and melodic hard rock.
