Richard Marx

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Richard Marx rose to prominence in the late 1980s in a style that sits between pop rock, soft rock and adult contemporary, characterized by direct, melodic songwriting and a strong emphasis on ballads. Before launching his career under his own name, Marx worked in Los Angeles as a songwriter, backing vocalist and studio musician, notably after encouragement from Lionel Richie. His first album, Richard Marx, was released in 1987, followed by Repeat Offender (1989), Rush Street (1991), Paid Vacation (1994) and Flesh and Bone (1997) — milestones in a career that alternates radio-friendly rock tracks and more acoustic songs. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s he continued this trajectory with Days in Avalon (2000), My Own Best Enemy (2004), Emotional Remains (2008), Stories to Tell (2010) and Sundown (2019). Alongside performing, Marx has maintained a steady career as a songwriter for other artists, collaborating with the likes of Luther Vandross, NSYNC, Josh Groban and Keith Urban. His repertoire remains rooted in adult pop built around clear choruses, understated arrangements and song-focused writing.
