Heart
Founded in Vancouver in the mid-1970s around sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart initially established itself within a rock nourished by hard rock, folk rock and acoustic accents, with melodic songwriting that remained central despite changes in format and era. The band broke through with Dreamboat Annie in 1975, then followed with Little Queen in 1977 and Dog & Butterfly in 1978, a period when Heart established a sound that was both muscular and very crafted, carried by Ann Wilson's voice and Nancy Wilson's guitars. After several lineup changes at the turn of the 1980s, Heart evolved its aesthetic toward rock more calibrated for large stages and radio, evident on Heart in 1985, Bad Animals in 1987 and Brigade in 1990, without completely abandoning its rougher roots. The band then experienced periods of pause, reforming and reorientation, with Desire Walks On in 1993, Jupiters Darling in 2004, then a return to colors closer to its beginnings on Red Velvet Car in 2010, Fanatic in 2012 and Beautiful Broken in 2016. Present on North American stages for decades, Heart remains tied to the trajectory of Ann and Nancy Wilson, the only constant members of a lineup whose longevity was built between classic rock, melodic hard rock and acoustic interludes.
