Toto
Formed in Los Angeles in 1977, Toto brought together, around David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and Steve Lukather, studio musicians from the Californian pop and rock scene. The band first made its mark with the self-titled album “Toto” in 1978, which already outlined a blend of FM rock, melodic pop, and touches of funk and jazz. With “Toto IV” in 1982, Toto honed a highly arranged sound, driven by dense vocal harmonies and precise rhythmic work, with tracks such as “Rosanna,” “Africa,” and “Hold the Line” becoming cornerstones of its repertoire. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, several singers took turns, from Bobby Kimball to Joseph Williams, while the lineup explored a range spanning soft-rock ballads to a more hard-edged rock, as heard on “Isolation” (1984), “The Seventh One” (1988), and “Kingdom of Desire” (1992). The 2000s saw Toto alternate between hiatuses and reformations, leading to the releases of “Falling in Between” (2006) and “Toto XIV” (2015), along with a steady international touring schedule. Despite lineup changes, Toto has remained anchored in the combination of melodic guitars, prominent keyboards, and rhythm sections rooted in the tradition of Los Angeles studio musicians.
