Stefan Gwildis

Straddling soul, pop and jazz influences, Stefan Gwildis has for decades built a body of work centered on the German language and the heritage of Black American music. Born in Hamburg, he began performing in local bands and on the city’s theatre scene — from cabaret and musicals to cover groups — before moving toward a solo career with a stronger soul emphasis. From the 1990s he recorded under his own name and gradually gained recognition in the German-speaking world with German-language adaptations of soul standards as well as original compositions, often arranged for brass and string sections and a rhythm section close to rhythm and blues. Gwildis’s productions follow a warm, organic aesthetic, favouring expressive singing, vocal harmonies and midtempo grooves, with lyrics that mainly address relationships, everyday scenes and personal observations. Alongside his work as a singer he regularly appears in collective projects, collaborates with big bands and takes part in film and television productions as an actor or voice performer, further anchoring his career in the cultural life of Hamburg and Germany.
