Emperor

Founded in 1991 in Notodden, Norway, Emperor coalesced around guitarist-vocalist Vegard “Ihsahn” Tveitan and guitarist Tomas “Samoth” Haugen amid the ferment of the Norwegian black metal scene. The band quickly developed a strain of black metal with atmospheric and orchestral scope, combining rapid-fire riffs, extreme vocals, and long-form structures—placing Emperor at the crossroads of so-called traditional black metal and a more symphonic idiom. After early demos and a self-titled EP, the release of In the Nightside Eclipse in 1994 marked Emperor’s arrival on the international stage, followed by Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk in 1997, IX Equilibrium in 1999, and Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise in 2001, all issued by Candlelight Records. Legal troubles in the mid-1990s led to lineup changes and interruptions, but from the mid-2000s onward Emperor resumed occasional live activity, performing sets focused on its early recordings at European festivals and on select tours. In parallel, the members pursued various personal projects, while the band’s catalog remained synonymous with a dense, melodic, and often complex approach to black metal.
