Culture Shock
Under the name Culture Shock, James Pountney has been building a career firmly rooted in British drum and bass since the mid-2000s. The project took shape after he sent a demo and released his first record on the Moving Shadow label in 2004, before becoming a lasting presence in the UK bass scene, notably through productions for RAM Records. Culture Shock crafts a sound that combines the impact of drum and bass on the dancefloor, clear melodic writing and precise work on rhythmic tension, with tracks that blend vocal hooks, luminous pads, tight breaks and punchy basslines. Over the years James Pountney has steered Culture Shock from a rather direct, technical aesthetic toward broader formats while remaining anchored in a club-oriented logic. This evolution is also visible in collaborations with other producers from the British electronic scene and in a steady presence on festival and club circuits devoted to bass music. With the album Sequence, released in 2021, Culture Shock consolidates this progression into a long-format record that extends his work between rhythmic intensity and melodic construction.
