Giles Corey
Behind Giles Corey lies Dan Barrett, an American musician from Connecticut, also active in Have a Nice Life and Black Wing. This solo project took shape in the late 2000s in a register that sits between slowcore, dark folk, indie rock, ambient and drone, with spare writing, slow tempos and deliberately veiled textures. Giles Corey released a self-titled debut album in 2011, accompanied by the Deconstructionist book, a pairing that illuminates the project’s universe without altering its musical nature, centered on grave, often acoustic songs, traversed by noise textures and lo-fi production. Whereas Have a Nice Life more fully explores the collision of post-punk, shoegaze and industrial music, Giles Corey tightens the focus around a more intimate, confession-like form, while maintaining a taste for funeral atmospheres and elongated constructions. Dan Barrett uses Giles Corey as a distinct space in his discography, performed and circulated within independent scenes related to experimental, dark folk and slow music. Giles Corey thus remains associated with a minimalist, melancholic and haunted aesthetic, at the boundary between the folk song and the soundscape.
