Mount Eerie

Behind Mount Eerie is Phil Elverum, an American musician and producer based in Anacortes, Washington State, who adopted the name in 2003 after putting The Microphones on hold, referencing Mount Erie in his hometown. Mount Eerie’s work sits between indie folk, indie rock, lo-fi and experimental songwriting, with a strong connection to the landscapes of the U.S. Northwest, raw textures and often direct narration. Early Mount Eerie records, including No Flashlight (2005), continued Elverum’s handcrafted aesthetic, before albums like Lost Wisdom (2008), recorded with Julie Doiron and Frederick Squire, and Wind’s Poem (2009), which incorporated elements close to black metal and noise rock. Over the years Mount Eerie alternates acoustic formats, spare songs and denser pieces on Clear Moon (2012), Ocean Roar (2012) and Sauna (2015), while appearing on North American and European independent scenes and festivals such as All Tomorrow’s Parties and Primavera Sound. After the death of Geneviève Castrée, Elverum’s partner, Mount Eerie became more overtly autobiographical on A Crow Looked at Me (2017) and Now Only (2018). The project continued with Lost Wisdom Pt. 2 (2019), again with Julie Doiron, and Night Palace (2024).
