Skye Newman
Buoyed by the British urban scene, Skye Newman develops a project positioned between rap, soul and pop, firmly rooted in southeast London. Marked by a childhood of repeated moves and low-income households, she draws on everyday realities, the trajectories of people from working-class backgrounds and the experience of social precariousness to shape her writing. Her first contact with music came through an aunt who sang jazz and blues and introduced her to songwriting and the studio, before references like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Bob Marley and Eminem further shaped her sonic imagination. In her tracks, Skye Newman favors a direct, often introspective narrative, where self-representation intersects with the shared experiences of her circle, with attention to voices that are underrepresented in dominant narratives. The project alternates soul melodies, rap-like phrasing and sung choruses, without technical showmanship, leaving room for the lyrics and emotional subtleties. Surrounded by a circle of musician friends and strong family support, she gradually builds her presence through streaming platforms and social media, asserting an identity as a singer-songwriter centered on sincerity, the detail of the stories she tells and an intimate relationship with London culture.
