菊池ひみこ
Born in Sendai in 1953 and raised in Shiogama, 菊池ひみこ, often credited as Himiko Kikuchi, began with a classical piano education before also studying organ and composition. After touring in the 1970s with artists from Japan’s pop and folk scenes, she turned toward jazz around 1975 and deepened that language with pianist Sadayasu Fujii. A key milestone came in 1979 when she performed with Bingo Miki & The Inner Galaxy Orchestra at the Montreux Jazz Festival, an experience that preceded her solo debut Don’t Be Stupid in 1980. Her 1980s albums—including Flashing (1981), All Right (1982), Woman (1983), Reverse It (1984) and Flying Beagle (1987)—develop a very melodic jazz‑fusion blending funk, instrumental pop, Latin accents and electronic textures. She also appears alongside saxophonist Richie Cole on Cool “C” (1981). In the 1990s and 2000s, 菊池ひみこ expanded into film composition with Beam (1993) and into larger collective formats such as Himiko Kikuchi Big Band Live (2000) and the choral project Home In My Soul (2005). Settled in Tottori from 1999, Himiko Kikuchi has continued to perform—particularly in big band and double quartet settings—while engaging in educational and local activities.
