Moor Mother

Born in Aberdeen, Maryland, and later based in Philadelphia, Camae Ayewa works under the name Moor Mother at the intersection of poetry, experimental music, abstract hip‑hop, noise and free jazz. Emerging in the early 2010s within Philadelphia’s DIY and arts scenes, Moor Mother developed a practice built on spoken word, abrasive sound collages, fragmented rhythms and industrial textures, with a political dimension tied to Black American history and questions of memory. Her first widely recognized album, Fetish Bones, was released in 2016, followed by The Motionless Present in 2017 and Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes in 2019, which extend this dense, jagged aesthetic. Alongside her solo work she leads and participates in several collective projects, notably Black Quantum Futurism with Rasheedah Phillips, the free jazz quintet Irreversible Entanglements, and 700 Bliss as a duo with DJ Haram, where her approach shifts toward more direct forms between rap, electronics and performance. Her recent discography also includes Circuit City (2020), Brass with billy woods (2020), Black Encyclopedia of the Air (2021), Jazz Codes (2022), The Great Bailout (2024) and The Film with Sumac (2025).
