R.A.P. Ferreira

Born in Chicago and associated with Kenosha in Wisconsin, R.A.P. Ferreira first came to prominence under the name Milo, later also using other aliases such as Scallops Hotel, in an alternative hip-hop register where writing plays a central role. His rap blends spoken word, philosophical references, oblique humor and everyday observation, over productions that are often sober, jazzy, or deliberately off-kilter. After starting out with the trio Nom de Rap, Rory Ferreira released I Wish My Brother Rob Was Here in 2011 and Milo Takes Baths in 2012, before joining the Hellfyre Club orbit, supported notably by Busdriver and Open Mike Eagle, with whom he tours. His debut studio album, A Toothpaste Suburb, came out in 2014, followed by So the Flies Don’t Come in 2015, entirely produced by Kenny Segal, then Who Told You to Think??!!?!?!?! in 2017 and Budding Ornithologists Are Weary of Tired Analogies in 2018. In parallel, R.A.P. Ferreira develops more exploratory work under the name Scallops Hotel and founds his own label, Ruby Yacht. The name change to R.A.P. Ferreira began in 2019, with a sequence of records that extend this dense and introspective approach, from Purple Moonlight Pages in 2020 to the Light Emitting Diamond Cutter Scriptures in 2021, 5 to the Eye with Stars in 2022 and OUTSTANDING UNDERSTANDING in 2024. Based in Nashville, R.A.P. Ferreira remains tied to American independent scenes, between underground rap, performed poetry and carefully chosen collaborations.
