Dälek
Formed in Newark, New Jersey, in 1998, Dälek coalesced around Will Brooks, known as MC Dälek, together with Oktopus and Joshua Booth, emerging from the local DIY scene. The project developed an experimental hip‑hop in which rap structures blend with textures of noise, ambient and industrial music and, at times, shoegaze, producing a dense and often deliberately abrasive sound. After Negro Necro Nekros (1998), Dälek released From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots in 2002, followed by Absence (2005), Abandoned Language (2007) and Gutter Tactics (2009) — an initial period notably associated with the Ipecac label and scenes where rap, experimental rock and noise intersect. Untitled appeared in 2010, before a hiatus between 2011 and 2015. On resuming activity, Will Brooks reformed Dälek as a duo with long‑time collaborator Mike Manteca, continuing the trajectory with Asphalt for Eden (2016), Endangered Philosophies (2017) and Precipice (2022). Over their career Dälek have also pursued crossovers with other musical worlds, notably through collaborations with Techno Animal, Faust and Adam Jones.
