MONO

Formed in Tokyo in 1999, MONO has evolved as a Japanese instrumental quartet at the crossroads of post-rock, orchestral rock and shoegaze-like textures. From Under the Pipal Tree (2001) and One Step More and You Die (2002), MONO established a compositional approach built on long progressions, saturated guitars, repeated motifs and a pronounced use of dynamic contrast. The band broadened its palette with Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined (2004), the collaborative project Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain with World's End Girlfriend (2006), and Hymn to the Immortal Wind (2009), where string arrangements and a neoclassical sensibility became more prominent. Several MONO records were recorded with Steve Albini, in an aesthetic that preserves the density of rock while working with silence, tension buildup and sonic expansiveness. Active on post‑rock and experimental stages in Europe, North America and Japan since the 2000s, MONO continued this trajectory with Nowhere Now Here (2019) and Pilgrimage of the Soul (2021), retaining an instrumental musical language based on repetition, crescendos and the collision between melodic delicacy and electric detonation.
