God Is An Astronaut
Born in the early 2000s in County Wicklow, Ireland, God Is An Astronaut is part of the instrumental post-rock wave, blending saturated guitars, atmospheric layers and rhythms often close to space rock. Founded by brothers Torsten and Niels Kinsella with drummer Lloyd Hanney, the band developed early on a songwriting focused on contrasts between pared-down melodies, builds of intensity and subtle electronic textures, often within a cinematic aesthetic. The group emerged in 2002 with the album The End of the Beginning and consolidated its international presence with All Is Violent, All Is Bright (2005) and Far from Refuge (2007), before releasing God Is an Astronaut in 2008 and Age of the Fifth Sun in 2010, which marked a move toward longer compositions and more contrasted atmospheres. Subsequent releases, from Origins (2013) through Helios / Erebus (2015) and Epitaph (2018) to Ghost Tapes #10 and Somnia in 2021, continued this exploration of primarily instrumental post-rock nourished by ambient, alternative rock and metal influences. Alongside their studio albums, God Is An Astronaut has maintained an active live presence focused on clubs and festivals in the independent music circuit, paying particular attention to video projections and the visual dimension of their concerts.
