Montell Fish

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Montell Fish, real name Montell James Frazier, first develops a music marked by contemporary Christianity, spiritual hip-hop and R&B, before clearly widening his aesthetic toward alternative R&B, neo-soul and a more introspective bedroom-pop writing. Active since the mid-2010s, he early on releases several independent projects and then his first album, As We Walk into Forever, in 2016, followed by the EP Bedroom Gospel in 2017 and It’s Beautiful in 2018. From 2021, Montell Fish evolves his approach with tracks more detached from the initial religious framework, in a register blending soft vocals, lo-fi textures, soulful melodies and streamlined production. This transition takes a more definite form with Jamie in 2022, then the EP Her Love Still Haunts Me Like a Ghost the same year, built as a transitional project in a series linked to the theme of grief. In 2024, Montell Fish continues this thread with Charlotte, while developing in parallel the alias dj gummy bear for more electronic explorations. Having passed through varied scenes and formats, from independent circuits to North American tours and a television appearance with Darling in 2022, Montell Fish keeps at the center of his music an intimate writing, between confession, minimal soul and atmospheric pop.
