Prince Daddy & the Hyena

Emerging from Albany, New York’s DIY scene, Prince Daddy & the Hyena are part of the independent emo and pop-punk wave that appeared in the United States in the early 2010s. The band first made an impression with a raw aesthetic—heavily saturated guitars and often raspy vocals—backed by tours through basements, small clubs and community venues that shape that scene. The release of I Thought You Didn’t Even Like Leaving in 2016 marked an initial milestone, featuring straightforward compositions that combine punk energy, pronounced melodic lines and lyrics focused on relationships, boredom and everyday vulnerabilities. In 2019, Prince Daddy & the Hyena broadened their scope with Cosmic Thrill Seekers, a more structured record in which songs play more with tempo shifts, dynamic breaks and a continuous narrative, while retaining an emo and indie rock foundation. The third album, Prince Daddy & the Hyena (2022), confirmed this move toward greater variety, alternating fast, pop-punk-adjacent tracks with slower passages in which the voice takes a central role. Extensive touring in the United States and later in Europe, often alongside other contemporary emo acts, reinforced their identity as a live band, with tight collective playing and an emphasis on transitions between songs. Overall, Prince Daddy & the Hyena’s music is characterized by a blend of tension and melody, a taste for linked structures and lyrics that mix dark humor, vulnerability and observation of the social milieu from which the band emerged.
