underscores
Born in 2000 in San Francisco, April Harper Grey records under the name underscores, creating a project at the intersection of experimental pop and electronic music. Active online from her teens with dubstep productions influenced by Skrillex, underscores quickly broadened her palette to include hyperpop, pop‑punk, emo and indie pop. This shift is apparent on the EPs Skin Purifying Treatment (2018), We Never Got Strawberry Cake (2019) and Character Development! (2020), where songwriting takes on a more central role. With the album Fishmonger (2021), recorded at her parents’ house during the pandemic, underscores refined a blend of abrasive guitars, electronic rhythms and pop melodies; the same year she released the EP Boneyard AKA Fearmonger. That period also included touring as support for 100 gecs and a first short headlining tour in early 2022, before appearing at Lollapalooza. In 2023 Wallsocket, released on Mom + Pop, moved toward a more narrative-driven pop, mixing rock, folk, country and shoegaze within a fictional world set in the American Midwest, accompanied by an alternate-reality game and tours in North America and Europe. In 2024 underscores extended the cycle with Wallsocket (Director’s Cut), featuring the single “My Guy (Corporate Shuffle)”. Alongside her solo work, she’s involved in the electronic collective Six Impala, the bedroom-pop group Papaya & Friends, and occasionally releases as Milkfish, deliberately blurring genre and scene boundaries.
