JPEGMAFIA
Born in Brooklyn in 1989 to a Jamaican family, Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks developed his musical project between New York, Louisiana, a stint in the US Air Force and several periods abroad, notably Japan, where he released his first tracks as Devon Hendryx. Settling in Baltimore in 2015, he adopted the name JPEGMAFIA and became part of a local rap scene marked by strong political and social tension, a context that fed mixtapes such as Communist Slow Jams and Darkskin Manson. JPEGMAFIA then built a discography that blends experimental hip-hop, alternative rap, industrial textures, glitch, warped R&B and lo-fi production, with a pronounced taste for rhythm breaks, sound collages and contrasts between aggression, irony and more floating melodies. After Black Ben Carson (2016) he broadened his audience with Veteran (2018), then All My Heroes Are Cornballs (2019) and LP! (2021), while maintaining a very personal approach to writing and production. In parallel he pursued targeted collaborations, notably with Danny Brown on Scaring the Hoes (2023), and continued his trajectory with I Lay Down My Life for You (2024).
