Freddie Gibbs
Hailing from Gary, Indiana, Freddie Gibbs began in the mid-2000s to craft a rap style rooted in gangsta rap and contemporary hip-hop, blending detailed street-life narratives with introspection and nods to the Midwest. First noticed through a series of self-released mixtapes, he made a brief stop in the major-label system before structuring his output around the ESGN collective and label, gradually establishing himself on the American independent scene. His first full-length album, "ESGN" (2013), set a dark, direct aesthetic, carried forward by "Shadow of a Doubt" (2015) and "You Only Live 2wice" (2017), where trap productions intersect with soul influences and slower tempos. His work took on a distinct dimension through collaborations with strongly individual producers: first Madlib on "Piñata" (2014) and "Bandana" (2019), with sample-rich instrumentals, then The Alchemist on "Fetti" (2018, with Curren$y) and "Alfredo" (2020). With "Freddie" (2018) and "$oul $old $eparately" (2022), he solidified a path alternating between solo projects and duo albums, moving comfortably between club circuits and major festivals, and remaining associated with dense, technical, narrative writing within contemporary American rap.
