Kenny Mason
In Atlanta, since the mid-2010s, Kenny Mason has developed a writing and musical approach where Southern rap and trap intersect with guitars rooted in grunge, punk rap and shoegaze, in a format that alternates tense flows, melodic singing and abrasive hooks. Initially active within the House 9 collective, with several mixtapes released online between 2014 and 2016, Mason then honed a highly self-directed practice combining rap, production and sonic experimentation. He broadened his audience in 2019 with the single 'Hit', before releasing Angelic Hoodrat in 2020 and Angelic Hoodrat: Supercut in 2021, an extension of the debut featuring contributions from Denzel Curry and Freddie Gibbs. Subsequent releases include the mixtape Ruffs (2022), the EP 6 and Highway 9 (2023), and 9 (2024). Kenny Mason also appears on tracks by JID, including 'Dance Now', and moves through the American alternative rap scene, notably touring with Denzel Curry and appearing on the Scaring the Hoes tour bill. His tracks frequently shift from trap rhythms to heavier, sung passages while remaining within a hip‑hop framework.
