Califato ¾
Formed in Seville in 2018, Califato ¾ brings together several musicians from the Andalusian scene around a shared principle of collision between local heritage and contemporary music. Califato ¾ develops a sound that mixes nuevo flamenco, folktronica, rumba, copla, psychedelic rock, breakbeat, downtempo and motifs borrowed from sevillanas or processional marches, with an approach the band itself describes as “futuristic folklore.” The project emerged in the wake of the Seville collective and label Breaking Bass Records and took shape with L’ambôccá in 2018, followed by Puerta de la Cânne (2019), La Contraçeña (2021) and Êcclabô de Libertá (2024). Califato ¾’s tracks circulate flamenco voices, electronic textures, popular rhythms and Andalusian cultural references in a format that works equally well for rock concerts, electronic stages and Spanish festivals. Writing, often in Andalusian orthography, occupies a central place in Califato ¾’s identity, as does their way of making regional traditions, club culture and a collective spirit coexist without hierarchy among sources.
