Skullcrusher

Since the late 2010s, Helen Ballentine, performing as Skullcrusher, has developed a sensitive songwriting approach that sits between indie folk and ambient, where silence and sonic material become narrative elements in their own right. Based in Los Angeles and originally from Tarrytown, New York, she came to music after studying visual arts and working in galleries—a background that informs the very sculptural quality of her arrangements. Her early releases on Secretly Canadian, beginning with the self-titled EP 'Skullcrusher' in 2020, established an aesthetic of restrained acoustic guitars, whispered vocals, and subtle electronic arrangements. The 'Storm in Summer' EP (2021) continued this exploration of pared-down folk, shaped by atmospheric layers and a direct engagement with everyday life. With the album 'Quiet the Room' (2022), Skullcrusher broadened her palette toward more narrative forms, exploring memory, childhood, and the perception of time through gentle, finely detailed production, often in collaboration with musician-producer Noah Weinman. Live, she favors compact formats that extend this intimate relationship to sound and space, positioned between folk song, slow pop, and contemplative ambient.
