Ploy
Based in south London, Sam Smith records under the name Ploy, a trajectory launched in 2016 with 'Sala One Five' on Hessle Audio. Following that debut, Ploy released several EPs on Timedance, a label linked to a British scene that reworks club codes between UK bass, techno and off-kilter rhythms. His aesthetic is built around taut bass, dry percussion and often oblique structures, with a pronounced taste for syncopation and shifts in groove. The Ploy project later expanded to the New York label L.I.E.S., while Sam Smith founded Deaf Test — both a label and a party — alongside a monthly residency on Rinse FM. As a DJ and producer, Ploy moves between London, New York and several German clubs, in settings where soundsystem culture, techno and house intersect. His more recent productions move this vocabulary toward contemporary house nourished by progressive, tech-house and garage, without severing the rhythmic tensions that shape Ploy’s identity.
