Toni Braxton
Born in Severn, Maryland, Toni Braxton rose to prominence in the early 1990s after performing with her family group The Braxtons, before being discovered by L.A. Reid and Babyface, who brought her into the LaFace Records circle. Toni Braxton developed a contemporary R&B style infused with soul and adult pop, anchored by a deep, velvety contralto voice equally at ease on ballads and more up-tempo tracks. After her first recordings for the Boomerang soundtrack in 1992, she released the albums Toni Braxton (1993), Secrets (1996) and The Heat (2000) — three records that firmly established her repertoire, from Another Sad Love Song to Un-Break My Heart and You’re Makin’ Me High to He Wasn’t Man Enough. Her subsequent discography shows a broader approach, with More Than a Woman (2002), Libra (2005), Pulse (2010), the duet album Love, Marriage & Divorce with Babyface (2014), followed by Sex & Cigarettes (2018) and Spell My Name (2020). Alongside her music career, Toni Braxton has worked on Broadway in Beauty and the Beast and later Aida, and she held a residency in Las Vegas, building a career that spans mainstream R&B, the theatrical stage and frequent collaborations with Babyface.
