En Vogue

Formed in Oakland, California in the late 1980s around Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones, En Vogue emerged in the early 1990s with a vocal R&B rooted in soul, pop and new jack swing, defined by carefully worked harmonies and songwriting that alternates between crisp grooves, ballads and more sophisticated arrangements. Their debut album, Born to Sing (1990), quickly established the quartet, and Funky Divas (1992) broadened En Vogue’s sound toward a more pop-oriented production without abandoning its rhythm-and-blues foundation. Over the decade the group moved between mainstream R&B stages, film soundtracks and occasional collaborations — notably with Salt‑N‑Pepa — while undergoing several lineup changes. EV3 (1997) marked a new phase after Dawn Robinson’s departure, followed by Masterpiece Theatre (2000) and Soul Flower (2004). En Vogue’s trajectory has remained tied to collective work on their voices, with an identity based as much on ensemble singing as on individual performance. Revived in the 2010s with a lineup centered on Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron‑Braggs and Rhona Bennett, En Vogue released Electric Café in 2018.
