Umberto Tozzi

Born in Turin in 1952, Umberto Tozzi belongs to the tradition of popular Italian song, blending romantic ballads, melodic pop and rock accents. After early years in various local bands and work as a studio musician and songwriter for other performers in Italy in the early 1970s, Tozzi established himself nationally at the end of the decade with a series of emblematic hits such as 'Ti amo', 'Tu' and 'Gloria', where rock guitars, disco influences and instantly memorable choruses meet. His direct, love‑centred songwriting remains at the heart of his aesthetic, alternating intimate tracks, radio‑friendly pop formats and more orchestral arrangements. The singer’s career continued through the 1980s and 1990s with numerous tours and several appearances at the Sanremo Festival, notably in 1987 alongside Gianni Morandi and Enrico Ruggeri, and that same year with Raf at the Eurovision Song Contest with 'Gente di mare'. Tozzi records mainly in Italian but also issues Spanish and English versions of some songs, taking him to stages far beyond Italy while preserving a musical identity closely linked to Turin and the canzone tradition.
