Born Ruffians
Formed in Midland, Ontario, Canadian trio Born Ruffians emerged on the indie-rock scene in the mid-2000s with a self-titled EP and a subsequent move to Toronto, where they became part of the local independent venue and label network. Centered on Luke Lalonde (vocals, guitar), Mitch Derosier (bass) and Steve Hamelin (drums), their music blends angular guitars, staccato rhythms, melodic bass lines and a high-tenor vocal often supported by backing harmonies and call-and-response motifs. Built on straightforward pop forms, the songs frequently deal with intimate relationships, small-town life and the transition from adolescence to adulthood. After Red, Yellow & Blue (2008) they released Say It (2010) and Birthmarks (2013), the latter marking a turn toward more detailed arrangements while retaining the raw energy of their early work. Born Ruffians continued this evolution with Ruff (2015) and Uncle, Duke & The Chief (2018) — albums recorded in an independent setting and geared toward live performance — before issuing Juice (2020) and Squeeze (2020), two complementary records that extend their mix of lively rock, folk accents and taut pop. Active on tour across North America and Europe, Born Ruffians remain focused on a tight-band format, sometimes expanded on stage, and continue to explore immediate songwriting driven by pronounced rhythmic structures.
