The Gathering

The Gathering, a Dutch band formed in 1989 in Oss, crossed genre boundaries to become a cult name on the European alternative scene. Initially rooted in atmospheric metal with doom touches, the group made a major turn in 1995 with the arrival of Anneke van Giersbergen; her crystalline voice reshaped the band’s sonic identity on the album Mandylion, a cornerstone that propelled them onto the international stage. Influential records such as Nighttime Birds, How to Measure a Planet? and Souvenirs followed, during which The Gathering gradually moved away from metal to explore more experimental, airy and emotional territories, blending post‑rock, trip‑hop and ambient. After Anneke’s departure in 2007, the band continued its metamorphosis with singer Silje Wergeland, confirming an ever freer and more cinematic approach to composition. Renowned for immersive, organic live shows and a rare melodic sensitivity, The Gathering stands as an unclassifiable band, driven by emotion, innovation and a unique ability to combine power and delicacy in the same breath.
