Saturnus

Formed in the early 1990s in Copenhagen, Denmark, Saturnus is part of the European doom and death-doom movement, developing a slow, massive and highly melodic sound shaped by gothic atmospheres and vocals that alternate between deep growls, low singing and spoken passages. After several demos, Saturnus released the album Paradise Belongs to You in 1997, which established a style centered on long compositions, melancholic guitars and an introspective ambience, followed in 1998 by the EP For the Loveless Lonely Nights. The band deepened this aesthetic with Martyre (2000) and Veronika Decides to Die (2006), where structures became more complex and keyboards and atmospheric arrangements took on a greater role, while retaining Saturnus’s death-doom roots. Anchored by singer Thomas A. G. Jensen, the only constant through numerous lineup changes, Saturnus continued with Saturn in Ascension in 2012, noted for a stronger focus on dynamics and contrasts between calm passages and heavier sections, and with The Storm Within in 2023, which confirmed the Danish band’s place in a melodic doom vein where themes of loss, spirituality and inner states remain central, supported by a steady presence on the dark and extreme metal scene.
