My Dying Bride

Formed in 1990 in West Yorkshire around Aaron Stainthorpe and Andrew Craighan, My Dying Bride has from its beginnings aligned with the British death-doom movement alongside Paradise Lost and Anathema, with slow, heavy and melodic music in which doom riffs, death-metal passages, clean singing, guttural voices and violin or keyboard arrangements intersect across periods. After the demo Towards the Sinister and the EP Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium in 1991, the band lays the foundations of its aesthetic on As the Flower Withers in 1992, then refines a more funeral and atmospheric writing on Turn Loose the Swans in 1993 and The Angel and the Dark River in 1995, marked by a clear decline in growl. My Dying Bride then evolved its formula without breaking with its identity, through the experiments of 34.788%...Complete in 1998, then through a return to a heavier and more contrasting sound on The Light at the End of the World in 1999, The Dreadful Hours in 2001 and Songs of Darkness, Words of Light in 2004. The changes of musicians, notably around keyboards, violin and drums, accompanied these texture shifts without altering the core of the band. Still active, My Dying Bride continued this work on For Lies I Sire in 2009, A Map of All Our Failures in 2012, Feel the Misery in 2015, The Ghost of Orion in 2020 and A Mortal Binding in 2024.
