Anneke Van Giersbergen
Born in Sint-Michielsgestel, the Netherlands, in 1973, Anneke van Giersbergen came to prominence in the mid-1990s as the lead singer of the Dutch band The Gathering. With them she developed a sound that combined alternative rock, atmospheric metal and progressive touches, before leaving the band in 2007. She then launched the project Agua de Annique, where she pursued a more intimate, melodic songwriting approach, resulting in the albums Air (2007), Pure Air (2009) and In Your Room (2009). From 2012 onward she has released records under her own name, moving between alternative rock, dark pop and acoustic folk-tinged atmospheres — notably Everything Is Changing (2012), Drive (2013) and The Darkest Skies Are the Brightest (2021). At the same time, Anneke has maintained a busy role as a guest vocalist on the metal and prog scenes, both in studio and live, alongside musicians associated with acts such as Ayreon, Devin Townsend and Anathema. She also founded the band VUUR for a more progressive metal‑oriented outlet, while continuing solo tours in which her repertoire alternates between electric numbers and acoustic sets, combining covers from her time with The Gathering and more recent compositions.
