The Stranglers
Formed in Guildford in 1974, The Stranglers are a legendary British band whose provocative attitude and singular sound have left a lasting mark on rock history. Though they emerged amid the punk movement, their richer, more nuanced approach quickly set them apart. Driven by Jean-Jacques Burnel’s distinctive bass, Dave Greenfield’s dark keyboards and Hugh Cornwell’s powerful voice, they forged a unique identity blending raw energy, pop elegance and new wave tension. Between 1977 and 1978 they released three cult albums — Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes and Black and White — in just thirteen months, stringing together successes with Peaches, No More Heroes and Walk On By. Classics such as Golden Brown, Always the Sun and Strange Little Girl followed, cementing their status as essential. With more than 20 albums and 24 singles in the UK Top 40, The Stranglers have spanned six decades without ever betraying their original spirit. In 2024, marking their 50th anniversary, they celebrate their journey with a world tour and a live album, Fifty Years in Black, reaffirming their enduring influence and their place among the most respected bands in British rock.
