Sido
Born in East Berlin in 1980 under the name Paul Würdig, Sido first established himself on the late-1990s Berlin hip-hop scene between Royal Bunker, the duo Royal TS with B-Tight, and the collective Die Sekte, before taking on a national dimension in the early 2000s with Aggro Berlin’s circle. His rap then emerged from a raw, frontal register, rooted in German gangsta rap, battle rap, and neighborhood tales, with direct phrasing and dark productions. The 2004 release Maske, led by the track Mein Block, marks a turning point in his career and in the visibility of German-language rap for the general public. Over the years, Sido broadens his aesthetic toward a more melodic rap and more open to pop, without completely abandoning his roots, as shown by Ich (2006), Ich und meine Maske (2008), 30-11-80 (2013), VI (2015), Ich und keine Maske (2019) and Paul (2022). This evolution also goes through parallel formats, notably the album Dein Lieblings Album with Harris in 2005 under the name Deine Lieblings Rapper, 23 with Bushido in 2011, then Royal Bunker with Kool Savas in 2017. Present on both major stages and in more cross-disciplinary contexts, Sido has also developed activity as a producer, television personality and actor, while remaining associated with autobiographical writing, narrative rap, and hooks that often bring together hip-hop, pop-rap and urban song.
