Shai
Formed in the early 1990s on Howard University's campus in Washington, D.C., Shai established itself as an American R&B vocal quartet grounded between soul, new jack swing and a cappella ballads. Brought together by singers from the same graduating class, Shai first recorded a demo of "If I Ever Fall in Love" that circulated on local radio and led to a contract with Gasoline Alley/MCA. The group released the album …If I Ever Fall in Love in 1992, supported by several R&B singles, and followed with Right Back at Cha in 1993, which extended the debut's success through new versions and additional tracks. In 1995 Shai explored a slightly darker, mid‑tempo sound with the album Blackface, while Destiny, released in 1999, represented an attempt to update the group's songwriting in line with late‑1990s R&B. Focused on tight harmonies, spacious vocal arrangements and romantic themes, Shai's music favors slow ballads, a cappella pieces and a few more rhythmic numbers inherited from new jack swing. Despite lineup changes over time, Shai remains associated with the American R&B and soul scenes, particularly through nostalgic tours dedicated to 1990s vocal groups.
