Donell Jones

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Donell Jones is part of the American R&B movement of the late 1990s and 2000s, known for songwriting focused on ballads, mid-tempos and an intimate urban soul. Before releasing his own records, he made a name as a songwriter within Eddie F’s circle and contributed to tracks for Usher and 702, then launched his solo career with My Heart in 1996. Jones gained wider recognition in R&B with Where I Wanna Be (1999), notably propelled by the single U Know What’s Up featuring Lisa Lopes, and continued with Life Goes On (2002) and Journey of a Gemini (2006). His style remained rooted in direct melodies, spare arrangements and a supple vocal delivery, balancing love confessions and muted grooves. After his period at LaFace, Donell Jones pursued a more independent path with The Lost Files (2009), Lyrics (2010), Forever (2013) and 100% Free (2021). Over the years he has also collaborated with artists such as Jon B. and Jacquees while maintaining an identity faithful to contemporary R&B and urban pop.
