SOiL

Formed in Chicago in 1997, SOiL emerged from musicians who had played in extreme metal bands Oppressor and Broken Hope, and were soon joined by vocalist Ryan McCombs. The quartet developed a sound positioned between alternative metal, hard rock and nu metal, featuring heavy guitars, a strong sense of groove and direct choruses delivered with a gritty vocal. After two independent EPs, SOiL released Throttle Junkies in 1999 and stepped up with Scars in 2001, an album that firmly established the band on the American metal scene of the early 2000s, followed by Redefine in 2004. McCombs’s departure began a new era led by A.J. Cavalier, documented on True Self (2006) and Picture Perfect (2009), while SOiL continued to tour the U.S. and Europe. In 2011 Ryan McCombs rejoined to reform the classic lineup around Adam Zadel and Tim King, two members from the band’s early years. The group carried on with Whole in 2013 and expanded its catalogue with the covers collection Play It Forward in 2022 and Restoration in 2023, consisting of newly recorded versions of SOiL songs.
