Shaggy

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1968, Orville Richard Burrell quickly became known as Shaggy after moving to New York in the late 1980s, where he became part of the local dancehall scene before serving several years in the US Marines. Shaggy emerged in the early 1990s with a cover of "Oh Carolina" and followed with a string of reggae and dancehall albums aimed at crossover audiences, including "Pure Pleasure" (1993) and "Boombastic" (1995), which established his deep voice and deejay-style phrasing within a blend of digital rhythms, R&B influences and pop choruses. With "Hot Shot" (2000), propelled notably by "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel", Shaggy secured a lasting international presence, and went on to release "Lucky Day" (2002), "Clothes Drop" (2005), "Intoxication" (2007) and "Summer in Kingston" (2011), where he refined a reggae-fusion style oscillating between party tracks and more melodic ballads. From the 2010s onward he increased collaborations, notably the joint album "44/876" with Sting in 2018, and the projects "Wah Gwaan?!" (2019), "Christmas in the Islands" (2020) and "In the Mood" (2023), exploring intersections between dancehall, pop, soca and contemporary reggae. A recipient of several Grammy Awards in the reggae category, Shaggy remains associated with an accessible Caribbean aesthetic built around vocal duets, sung choruses and regular use of Jamaican patois in a broadly mainstream context.
