Robert Glasper
Born in Houston, Texas, in 1978, Robert Glasper trained between the church, the local scene and studies at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and later at New York’s New School. A pianist, composer and producer, Glasper has, since the early 2000s, developed music that links contemporary jazz, post‑bop, hip‑hop, R&B and soul, with a flexible, rhythmically grounded approach in which improvisation engages with song‑like structures. His first trio albums — Mood (2003), Canvas (2005), In My Element (2007) and Double‑Booked (2009) — established him in the New York jazz circuit before the expansion of the Robert Glasper Experiment project, a lineup where electric textures and vocals take on a larger role on Black Radio (2012), Black Radio 2 (2013) and ArtScience (2016). Glasper has also collaborated extensively with artists from rap, neo‑soul and jazz — from Bilal to Erykah Badu, Common, Kendrick Lamar and Terrace Martin — while continuing crossover projects such as Everything’s Beautiful (2016), Fuck Yo Feelings (2019) and Black Radio III (2022).
