Jill Scott
Born in Philadelphia in 1972, Jill Scott emerged around the turn of the 2000s as a leading figure in American neo-soul, linking soul heritage, contemporary R&B, jazz and spoken word. Coming from her city’s poetry and café-concert scenes, she first attracted attention by co-writing "You Got Me" for The Roots before releasing in 2000 the album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, which blends soul ballads, mid‑tempo tracks and spoken passages. She extended this approach on Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 (2004) and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007), while documenting her stage work with the live recording Experience: Jill Scott 826+ (2001). With The Light of the Sun (2011) and Woman (2015) she emphasized jazz, funk and gospel hues, relying on warm arrangements and an expressive vocal style. Alongside her recordings, Jill Scott has pursued numerous collaborations in soul and hip‑hop, contributed to film soundtracks and built a career as an actress for film and television, forging a musical and audiovisual trajectory while remaining tied to Philadelphia’s soul tradition.
