Butcher Brown

Founded in Richmond, Virginia, in 2009, Butcher Brown brings together Marcus Tenney, Morgan Burrs, Corey Fonville, Andrew Randazzo and DJ Harrison in a quintet that moves between jazz, jazz fusion, soul, funk, hip‑hop and R&B. Butcher Brown’s music relies on flexible, collective writing, with a marked taste for the textures of 1970s jazz‑funk, groove‑based rhythms and an approach to improvisation that shifts seamlessly from one register to another. The group first came to attention with Backtracks in 2013, then All Purpose Music in 2014 and Grown Folk in 2015, before expanding their discography with Live at Vagabond and The Healer in 2017, and Camden Session and AfroKuti: A Tribute To Fela in 2018. Butcher Brown later joined Concord Jazz and released #KingButch in 2020 — the same year as Encore — followed by Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey in 2022, Solar Music in 2023 and Letters from the Atlantic in 2025. Across these records the band refines a language in which contemporary jazz forms intersect with codes borrowed from the beat scene, modern soul and African‑American music, all within a compact group format.
