Mothica

Born McKenzie Ellis in Oklahoma City, Mothica first developed her musical project online, self‑produced, before moving to Brooklyn in the early 2010s. She began releasing songs around the age of 18 and put out the EP Mythic in 2015, which already displayed intimate songwriting and sounds between dream pop, electropop and alternative pop. Over subsequent releases, Mothica shifted this framework toward a more marked mix of alternative rock, emo and pop punk, with direct choruses and a dark but clear production. After several EPs such as Heavy Heart (2017) and Ashes (2018), Mothica released her debut album Blue Hour in 2020, then forever fifteen in 2021, Nocturnal in 2022 and Kissing Death in 2024. Her trajectory remains tied to hybrid scenes — pop, rock and alternative — and she also moves within them through collaborations with MEMBA, nothing,nowhere., Scene Queen and PVRIS. In her lyrics Mothica regularly addresses mental health, addictions and traumatic experiences, in a format that combines pop effectiveness, emo tension and discreet electronic textures.
