Ministry

Formed in Chicago in 1981 around Al Jourgensen, Ministry goes through several phases, first marked by a synth-pop and new wave aesthetic on With Sympathy in 1983, before a decisive shift toward a harsher sound where industrial rock, industrial metal, mechanical rhythms and guitars from thrash intersect. This transformation is solidified with Twitch in 1986, then especially with The Land of Rape and Honey in 1988 and The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste in 1989, records that establish Ministry on the alternative and metal scenes of the late 1980s. The group, long built around the duo Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker, has undergone many lineup changes, with notable stints by Mike Scaccia, Bill Rieflin, Chris Connelly, and John Bechdel. In the 1990s, Ministry further hardens its writing on Psalm 69 in 1992, then explores heavier and slower formats on Filth Pig in 1996 and Dark Side of the Spoon in 1999. After an initial breakup in 2008, Ministry resumed activity in 2011 and pursues a trajectory centered on massive industrial metal, with drier electronic textures and explicit political themes, with Relapse in 2012, AmeriKKKant in 2018, Moral Hygiene in 2021 and Hopiumforthemasses in 2024. On stage, Ministry remains associated with international rock and metal festivals as well as tours where the band's industrial heritage dialogues with a frontally live energy.
