Michael Franti

Born in Oakland and associated with the San Francisco scene, Michael Franti has since the mid-1980s built a career at the crossroads of hip-hop, reggae, rock, soul, funk and spoken word. He first drew notice with The Beatnigs, a group blending industrial punk and militant poetry, then with The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, a project more clearly oriented toward activist rap and abrasive urban textures, notably on Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury in 1992. From 1994, Michael Franti refocused his writing with Spearhead, later becoming Michael Franti & Spearhead, in a band format where songs open to more organic grooves, between soul, roots reggae, folk rock and pop. This evolution is heard on Home (1994), Chocolate Supa Highway (1997), Stay Human (2001), Everyone Deserves Music (2003) and Yell Fire! (2006), before more melodic albums like All Rebel Rockers (2008), The Sound of Sunshine (2010), All People (2013), SoulRocker (2016), Stay Human, Vol. II (2019), Work Hard & Be Nice (2020), Follow Your Heart (2022) and Big Big Love (2023). Michael Franti has also undertaken numerous occasional collaborations, from Zap Mama to Jovanotti, while remaining identified with a writing that links rallying refrains, social consciousness and musical fusion, in alternative rock circuits, mainstream festivals and reggae-pop stages.
