letlive.
Formed in the early 2000s in Los Angeles, letlive. emerged from the American post-hardcore scene by blending punk, alternative rock and elements drawn from soul, metal and spoken word. Around singer Jason Aalon Butler the band went through numerous lineup changes but retained an identity centred on intense live energy and socially and politically charged lyrics. After an initial period on the local independent circuit, letlive. released the 2005 album “Speak Like You Talk”, which established a tense, contrast-rich style alternating melodic passages with more abrasive sections. The release of “Fake History” in 2010, and its reissue in 2011, opened up a wider touring network—playing mid-sized venues and festivals alongside other post-hardcore and metalcore acts. With “The Blackest Beautiful” (2013) letlive. amplified dynamic ruptures, off-kilter rhythms and soul-inflected colors, while maintaining vocals that shifted between screams, spoken phrasing and sung lines. The 2016 album “If I’m the Devil…” marked a clearer turn toward alternative rock and more open structures, with a strong emphasis on atmospheres and gradually building tension. letlive. announced their split in 2017, leaving a concise discography that documents the evolution of a band navigating between hardcore, experimentation and political awareness within the American rock scene of the 2000s and 2010s.
