Marc Houle
Canadian producer and musician from Windsor, Ontario, Marc Houle emerged from the minimal techno scene that developed between Detroit and the Canada–US border before relocating to Berlin. Shaped by 1990s rave culture, he quickly gravitated toward Richie Hawtin's circle and released his first maxi singles and then the album Restore in 2004 on the Minus label, which established him on European club stages. He followed with Bay of Figs (2008) and Drift (2010), refining a stripped-down techno approach where repetitive rhythms, dry basslines and simple melodic motifs draw as much from synth-pop as from video-game atmospheres. In the early 2010s Houle co-founded the label Items & Things with Magda and Troy Pierce; there he released the album Undercover in 2012 and a series of dancefloor-oriented maxi singles. Better known for his live performances than for DJ sets, Marc Houle favors long, evolving structures that play on the tension between minimalism, acid accents and more playful touches, whether in intimate clubs or on the main stages of international techno festivals.
